Product Details
Gyprock Soundchek™ is a high-density gypsum plasterboard with a specially formulated dense core that significantly improves sound transmission performance compared to standard plasterboard. The same dense core also provides elevated soft body and hard body impact resistance, making it a practical dual-function board in commercial and residential acoustic partitions.
Soundchek™ provides effective airborne noise insulation and impact noise insulation. The board is available in two thicknesses: 10mm for residential quiet zones and 13mm for commercial acoustic partitions, inter-tenancy walls, and hotel/hospital bedrooms. Soundchek™ is easily identified by its yellow face paper.
For maximum acoustic performance, Soundchek™ should be combined with bulk acoustic insulation in the wall cavity and a resilient mounting system. Explore the Acoustic Solutions category for complementary products.
Note: Soundchek™ is not moisture resistant and must not be used in contact with water or in areas with sustained relative humidity above 90%.
Best For
- Residential home theatre walls and ceilings
- Quiet zones — studies, nurseries, master bedrooms adjacent to living areas
- Inter-storey ceilings in two-storey homes
- Inter-tenancy walls in multi-residential buildings (commercial grade 13mm)
- Hotel bedroom and ensuite walls and ceilings
- Acoustic bulkheads and service shafts where sound control is specified alongside Steel Stud and Ceiling Systems
- Meeting rooms and conference suites requiring NCC Part F5 acoustic compliance
Choosing the Right Thickness
10mm — Residential Acoustic Applications
The 10mm board is suited to residential applications where occupant comfort rather than NCC compliance is the driver. Use it to reduce transfer of household noise between rooms — TV rooms, studies, laundries, and children's play areas adjacent to quieter living spaces.
13mm — Commercial and NCC-Compliant Systems
The 13mm board is the correct choice for inter-tenancy walls, party walls, and any application governed by NCC Section F5 requirements. It delivers higher acoustic mass, and when used in a tested wall system, contributes to the STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings that certifiers require for multi-residential developments in Perth and WA.
Why Builders and Certifiers Specify It
- Dense core delivers measurable acoustic mass — not just a marketing claim; the 10mm board weighs 9.3 kg/m² vs 5.7 kg/m² for standard Gyprock PLUS™
- Both thicknesses are non-combustible per BCA Clause C1.12 — compatible in fire-rated wall systems alongside Fyrchek™
- Can be used in systems where fire separation and acoustic separation are both specified — one board satisfies both requirements
- Used by certifiers for NCC Part F5 inter-tenancy compliance in WA multi-residential approvals
- Available in lengths up to 4800mm — reduces joins in tall commercial walls. See the plasterboard range for the full size matrix.
Installation Notes That Prevent Callbacks

- Acoustic performance depends on the whole system, not just the board. Seal all penetrations (power outlets, pipes, services) with acoustic sealant — a wall with ungasketed penetrations can drop 10+ STC points regardless of the board used.
- For maximum performance, combine Soundchek™ with bulk acoustic insulation in the cavity. Explore the Insulation range for appropriate acoustic batt products.
- Do not bridge the wall with solid blocking or rigid connections that short-circuit sound isolation — use resilient clips or channels where NCC compliance is required.
- Soundchek™ is not suitable for wet areas — do not use in bathrooms or areas of sustained high humidity. Specify Sensitive or Aquacheck™ for moisture-critical applications instead.
What stud spacing does Soundchek™ require?
450 mm or 600 mm centres is typical for residential acoustic partitions. Commercial NCC-compliant systems can differ, because the spacing forms part of the tested wall assembly rather than being a property of the board — check the maximum for your specified system in the current CSR Gyprock technical documentation before you set out.
Does Soundchek™ meet NCC inter-tenancy wall requirements?
Soundchek™ boards are used in tested Gyprock wall systems that achieve the STC ratings required by NCC Part F5 for inter-tenancy walls in Class 2 and Class 3 buildings. The board alone does not constitute a compliant system — the full assembly (framing, insulation, mounting, fixings, sealing) must match a Gyprock-tested system. Confirm the applicable tested system with CSR Gyprock documentation.
How does Soundchek™ compare to standard plasterboard for acoustic performance?
Soundchek™ 10mm weighs 9.3 kg/m² vs 5.7 kg/m² for Gyprock PLUS™ — the additional mass is the primary acoustic benefit. Heavier boards transmit less airborne sound energy. In practice, a double-layer Soundchek™ wall in a tested system can achieve significantly higher STC ratings than a standard plasterboard partition.
Can Soundchek™ be used in wet areas?
No. Soundchek™ must not be used in contact with water or in environments with sustained relative humidity above 90%. For acoustic performance in wet areas (hotel ensuites, change rooms), specify Fyrchek™ MR, which combines fire resistance, acoustic grade core, and moisture resistance.
