Product Details

Gyprock Fyrchek™ is a fire-rated plasterboard with a specially processed glass fibre-reinforced gypsum core that maintains structural integrity when subjected to direct flame. The glass fibres remain intact under heat, preventing the board from collapsing and thereby maintaining the integrity of the fire-rated assembly for the duration of the rated period.

Fyrchek™ is also an acoustic grade board, meaning a single product can meet both fire separation and acoustic performance requirements in inter-tenancy walls, party walls, service shafts, and multi-residential ceilings. The board is available in 13mm and 16mm thicknesses — 16mm is specified for higher fire resistance levels or where additional acoustic mass is needed.

Fyrchek™ is easily identified by its pink coloured face paper. It is used as part of tested Gyprock fire and acoustic wall systems — the board alone does not constitute a fire-rated assembly. For wet areas requiring fire resistance, use Fyrchek™ MR (moisture resistant blue board) instead.

Best For

  • Fire separation and smoke walls in commercial buildings
  • Inter-tenancy walls and party walls in multi-residential developments
  • Multi-residential unit ceilings requiring fire resistance
  • Lift wells, plant rooms, and service shafts
  • Walls and ceilings in any building where the NCC requires a tested fire assembly — pair with Steel Stud and Ceiling Systems for the complete tested assembly
  • Any non-wet-area wall or ceiling where fire and/or acoustic performance is required

Choosing the Right Thickness

13mm — Standard Fire and Acoustic Systems

The 13mm board is used in the majority of fire-rated wall and ceiling systems specified in commercial buildings in Perth and WA. It delivers the acoustic mass and fire performance required for inter-tenancy wall systems and single-layer ceiling systems in most Class 2 and Class 3 buildings.

16mm — Higher Fire Resistance or Additional Acoustic Mass

The 16mm board is specified when higher fire resistance levels are required (e.g. 90 or 120-minute FRLs) or when the acoustic specification requires additional mass. A 16mm Fyrchek™ board weighs 12.5 kg/m² compared to 10.5 kg/m² for 13mm — the additional weight contributes measurably to acoustic performance in tested assemblies.

Why Builders and Certifiers Specify It

  • Glass fibre-reinforced core maintains structural integrity under direct flame — fire resistance is a function of the core, not just the gypsum mass
  • Available in 13mm and 16mm — single product covers most commercial fire-rated wall and ceiling assembly requirements in WA
  • Can be used in systems that also meet NCC F5 acoustic requirements — Soundchek™ and Fyrchek™ are often specified together on different walls within the same project
  • Non-combustible per BCA Clause C1.12 — confirmed for use wherever a non-combustible material is required
  • Pink face paper is a quick visual identifier on site — reduces the risk of a standard board being installed in a fire-rated location

Installation Notes That Prevent Callbacks

  • Fyrchek™ boards are part of a tested system. The fire resistance of the assembly depends on the full specification: frame type, frame gauge, fixing schedule, board thickness, board layers, and any penetration sealing. Do not substitute components without confirming the tested system remains compliant.
  • All penetrations through fire-rated walls (pipes, conduits, cable routes, services) must be sealed with fire-rated sealant appropriate for the penetration type. Unsealed penetrations void the fire rating.
  • Pair with appropriate acoustic insulation in the cavity for inter-tenancy wall systems. Explore Insulation and
  • Store protected from moisture — while Fyrchek™ is more robust than standard plasterboard due to its fibre reinforcement, the board is not moisture resistant and prolonged exposure to water will reduce its performance.

What fire rating does Fyrchek™ achieve?

Fyrchek™ boards achieve fire resistance as part of a tested Gyprock wall or ceiling system. The fire resistance level (FRL) depends on the complete assembly specification — the board thickness (13mm or 16mm), number of board layers, frame type and gauge, cavity fill, and fixing schedule. Refer to current Gyprock wall and ceiling systems documentation for the FRL of the specific assembly you are specifying. Common tested assemblies achieve FRLs from 30/30/30 to 120/120/120.

Is Fyrchek™ suitable for wet areas?

No — standard Fyrchek™ (pink board) is not moisture resistant. For fire-rated systems in wet areas, bathrooms, external eaves, and soffits, specify Fyrchek™ MR, which adds moisture resistance to the same fire-acoustic grade core.

Can I use Fyrchek™ for party walls between units in a Perth multi-residential building?

Yes — Fyrchek™ is one of the standard board choices for inter-tenancy walls in WA multi-residential developments. The wall assembly (framing, board layers, cavity insulation, sealing) must match a tested Gyprock system that achieves the FRL and STC rating required by the NCC and the building certifier. Confirm the specific tested system before commencing installation.

What jointing compound should I use with Fyrchek™?

Standard Gyprock setting and drying compounds from the Compounds range are appropriate for Fyrchek™ — the board joints the same way as standard plasterboard. Use a setting compound for the tape coat and drying compounds for fill and finish coats.

What is the difference between Fyrchek™ 13mm and 16mm?

The 16mm board provides additional fire resistance duration and/or higher acoustic mass compared to 13mm. It is specified for assemblies requiring higher FRLs (e.g. 120-minute systems) or for inter-tenancy walls where the acoustic specification requires greater mass. The 16mm board is heavier (12.5 kg/m²) and less commonly stocked — confirm availability with our team.

Can I get Fyrchek™ delivered to my Perth project?

Yes — Aussie Plasterboard stocks Fyrchek™ in both thicknesses and delivers across WA from Osborne Park. Request a quote or call (08) 9244 4250 for project quantities.
