Choosing a membrane for a Perth wall or roof
"Sarking", "wall wrap" and "vapour permeable membrane" get used interchangeably on site, but they do different jobs, and the National Construction Code treats them differently. Perth sits in ABCB Climate Zone 5 , which is the number that decides which of them you are allowed to use where.
The three jobs a membrane does
- Radiant barrier. A reflective foil face earns extra R-value , but only when it faces an air cavity. Foil pressed against cladding does nothing thermally.
- Weather barrier. Keeps wind-driven rain, dust and air out of the wall or roof space. This is the water and air control classification on the data sheet.
- Vapour control. Either stops water vapour crossing the wall (a Class 1 or 2 vapour barrier) or lets it diffuse out (a Class 3 or 4 vapour permeable membrane). Getting this the wrong way round is what causes condensation inside a wall.

One warning worth repeating
A reflective Heavy Duty sarking is rated as a wall wrap only in Climate Zone 1. It is still the right product for a Perth roof . If you are wrapping a Perth wall, use a vapour permeable membrane instead , every product page in this range carries its full AS/NZS classification table so you can check before you order.
