Acoustic Insulation for Perth Builders

Aussie Plasterboard stocks the FibreFlex acoustic range , 100% polyester insulation, made in Australia from recycled fibre, non-itch and odourless. It is held at our Osborne Park warehouse and delivered across Western Australia.

Acoustic work covers three different problems: echo bouncing around inside a room, sound passing through a wall into the next one, and sound travelling over the top of a partition through the ceiling space. Each has a different product and a different number on the data sheet. The table below sorts out which is which, and every product page carries its full performance table so you can check the figure before you order.

The two numbers on an acoustic data sheet

Absorbing is not blocking, and mixing the two up is the most common acoustic specification error we see. A room lined with a high-NRC material can still be perfectly audible from the corridor. Note too that R w and R-value are unrelated despite the letter they share: R-value is thermal resistance.

• NRC , Noise Reduction Coefficient. How much sound the material absorbs when sound hits it. It runs from 0 to about 1, and it is the number that matters for reverberation inside a room: offices, classrooms, gyms, restaurants, plant rooms.
• R w , Weighted Sound Reduction Index. How much sound a complete wall or ceiling system blocks on its way through . It is rated for the whole system, not the insulation on its own , the insulation lifts the rating the system achieves.

The general-purpose absorber. Rolls, sheets or batts, in four densities, for ceilings, walls and under floors where the brief is simply "quieten this room down".

FibreFlex FAB

Acoustic Blanket, for when the specification names a density and a thickness rather than a product. Five densities from 11 to 48 kg/m³, four thicknesses from 25 to 100 mm.

Sound Blanket, for lifting the rating of a stud wall rather than absorbing echo inside a room. Rated as a complete system, so the number on the sheet is the number the wall achieves.

Stacked baffles for the plenum above a partition wall. Solves the flanking path that lets a conversation travel over the top of a wall into the next room.

When the job needs thermal performance too

Polyester insulates as well as it absorbs, so on a lot of Perth jobs one product covers both briefs. PolySupreme is the range built for that: wall batts, ceiling batts and underfloor rolls with declared R-values from R1.5 to R4.0 , declared rather than calculated, which is the distinction a certifier will look for. Perth sits in NCC Climate Zone 5, so check the R-value your wall or ceiling build-up has to reach before selecting.

FAQ

What is the difference between NRC and Rw?

NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) measures how much sound a material absorbs when sound strikes it, so it is the number that matters for echo and reverberation inside a room. R w (Weighted Sound Reduction Index) measures how much sound a complete wall or ceiling system blocks on its way through, so it is the number that matters for noise between rooms. They are not interchangeable: a room lined with a high-NRC material can still leak conversation into the corridor next door.

Will acoustic insulation on its own stop noise through a party wall?

No single product does it alone. R w is a property of the whole system — the studs, the plasterboard, whether the wall is staggered or resiliently mounted, and how carefully the penetrations are sealed. Insulation in the cavity lifts that rating, and FibreFlex FSB is tested in a 64 mm steel stud wall for exactly that reason, but a gap around a power point will undo more than the insulation adds.

Is polyester as good as glasswool for acoustic work?

For absorption the two perform comparably at equivalent density and thickness — what changes is handling. Polyester is non-itch, odourless and needs no protective clothing or masks, which is why it gets specified on occupied fit-outs, healthcare and school jobs where trades are working alongside other people. The FibreFlex range is made in Australia from recycled fibre and is fully recyclable at end of life.

Do I need ceiling baffles above office partitions?

If the partitions stop at the ceiling grid rather than continuing to the slab, then yes — sound travels straight over the top through the plenum, and the wall's rated performance is never achieved on site. Ceiling baffles close that path. It is worth deciding at design stage, because retrofitting them means lifting the ceiling again.
