Product Details

Gyprock Fyrchek™ MR combines the glass fibre-reinforced fire-resistant core of the Fyrchek™ range with additional moisture resistance properties — making it the correct specification for fire-rated wall and ceiling systems in wet areas. This is the board that resolves the common site dilemma: 'I need fire rating here, but it's also a wet area.'

Like standard Fyrchek™, the MR board is also an acoustic grade board, so a single product can address fire, moisture, and acoustic requirements simultaneously. It is available in 13mm and 16mm. Fyrchek™ MR is identified by its blue coloured face paper (Fyrchek™ standard is pink), making it easy to differentiate on site.

Fyrchek™ MR is used where fire-rated systems meet wet or humid environments: hotel and hospital ensuite ceilings, external soffits and eaves that require fire resistance, and plant rooms exposed to moisture. For residential wet areas without fire rating requirements, Aquacheck™ or Sensitive are simpler choices.

Best For

  • Wet area ceilings and walls in buildings where the NCC requires a fire-rated assembly
  • Hotel and hospital ensuite and bathroom walls and ceilings
  • External soffits and eaves required to achieve a fire resistance level
  • Commercial laundries and kitchen walls with a fire rating requirement
  • Plant rooms exposed to moisture or humidity where fire separation is specified
  • Multi-residential buildings where bathrooms adjoin or are above fire-rated inter-tenancy elements — a combination of Fyrchek™ MR and Shaft Liner MP is common in these locations

Why Builders and Certifiers Specify It

  • Eliminates the need to use multiple products in fire-rated wet area locations — one board satisfies fire, moisture, and acoustic requirements
  • Blue face paper differentiates it clearly from standard Fyrchek™ on site — reduces installation errors
  • Available in 13mm and 16mm — covers most tested fire assembly FRL requirements
  • Non-combustible per BCA Clause C1.12 — compatible with all Steel Stud and Ceiling Systems and tested fire assemblies
  • Moisture resistance is core-deep, face-deep, and back-deep — not just a surface coating

Installation Notes That Prevent Callbacks

  • Fyrchek™ MR is moisture resistant, not waterproof. In shower recesses and tile wet zones, a waterproof membrane compliant with AS3740 is still required over the board before tiling.
  • All penetrations must be sealed with fire-rated sealant appropriate for the penetration type and the assembly's FRL. Penetration sealing is as critical as the board and framing choices.
  • Where Fyrchek™ MR is used in external soffits or eaves, ensure the full assembly (including the back face and any backing insulation) is compatible with exposure conditions. Pair with an appropriate foil or sarking product where vapour management is required behind the assembly.

What is the difference between Fyrchek™ and Fyrchek™ MR?

Both boards share a glass fibre-reinforced fire-resistant and acoustic-grade core. Fyrchek™ MR adds moisture resistance — the core, face, and back paper are all moisture treated. Fyrchek™ (pink) is for fire-rated dry areas. Fyrchek™ MR (blue) is for fire-rated wet areas and high-humidity locations. The blue and pink face papers make identification on site straightforward.

Does Fyrchek™ MR still need a waterproof membrane before tiling?

Yes. Moisture resistant means the board resists moisture absorption, but it is not a waterproof barrier. In shower recesses and wet zones where tiles will be applied, a waterproof membrane system compliant with AS3740 must be applied over the board. Fyrchek™ MR is the substrate; the membrane provides the waterproofing.

Can Fyrchek™ MR be used for external soffits?

Yes — Fyrchek™ MR is one of the common specifications for external soffits in buildings where the soffit assembly requires a fire resistance level. The moisture resistance makes it tolerant of the higher humidity conditions in soffit applications. Confirm the tested fire assembly with Gyprock documentation for your project's FRL requirement.

What fire ratings does Fyrchek™ MR achieve?

There is no single figure for the board, because an FRL belongs to the whole assembly — board thickness, number of layers, framing, cavity fill and fixing schedule — rather than to any one component. Commonly tested systems achieve FRLs from 30/30/30 upward. Look up the rating for the exact system you are building in current CSR Gyprock tested system documentation, and have your building certifier confirm it.

Can I order Fyrchek™ MR in WA?

Yes — Aussie Plasterboard stocks Fyrchek™ MR and delivers across Western Australia from Osborne Park. Request a quote for project quantities or call (08) 9244 4250.
